Practical answers before a break bulk booking
Break bulk shipping questions, answered without overpromising.
These answers explain the information and decisions typically needed for a commercial inquiry. They do not replace vessel, terminal, port, lifting, customs, insurance or legal advice for a specific cargo movement.
What is break bulk shipping?
Break bulk shipping moves individual cargo units rather than loose dry bulk or standard containerized cargo. A machine, skid, generator, steel unit or project component may be lifted, handled, stowed and secured as a distinct piece. The actual transport method depends on its dimensions, weight, handling points, packing, route, port capability and carrier acceptance.
What is the difference between break bulk and bulk cargo?
Bulk cargo normally means loose commodities loaded directly into a hold, such as grain or ore. Break bulk cargo is unitized: each crate, case, machine, bundle, vehicle or project piece is identified and handled individually. A break bulk booking therefore needs more unit-level technical information than a generic commodity description.
Is break bulk the same as project cargo?
Not always. Project cargo may include one or more break bulk pieces, but it can also combine containers, RoRo, air freight, domestic trucking, temporary storage and installation-driven delivery windows. Break bulk describes a handling and carriage approach; project cargo describes a wider delivery scope.
How do I know whether my shipment needs break bulk shipping?
Start with the packed dimensions, gross and unit weight, centre of gravity, lifting points and packing condition. Cargo that cannot safely or legally fit a suitable container, or that needs individual lifting and stowage, may require a break bulk assessment. The carrier, terminal and relevant handling provider still decide whether they can accept the actual piece.
What information is needed for a break bulk quote from China?
Provide an itemized cargo list with packed L x W x H, gross and net weight, number of pieces, drawings or photographs, centre of gravity and lifting points when available, packing and securing details, origin and destination, cargo-ready date, Incoterm and any special handling, dangerous-goods or delivery requirement. Incomplete dimensions can invalidate a preliminary estimate.
Is there a maximum weight for break bulk cargo?
There is no universal maximum. Practical limits depend on the vessel, crane or gear configuration, berth, terminal operating rules, road permits, bridge and route restrictions, lifting arrangement, cargo dimensions and local provider acceptance. A stated weight alone is not enough to establish feasibility.
Can China Ship Net arrange factory pickup and port delivery for break bulk cargo?
Pickup, export-port transfer, yard handling, destination discharge coordination and inland delivery can be reviewed as part of the requested scope. Availability, route permits, equipment, local-provider terms and final pricing must be confirmed for the shipment rather than assumed from the ocean leg alone.
How long does break bulk shipping from China take?
Timing depends on cargo readiness, technical document quality, vessel and terminal availability, loading sequence, port congestion, weather, transshipment and destination discharge arrangements. A meaningful transit plan should separate pre-shipment feasibility work from the sea-leg schedule and final delivery scope.
